Physiotherapy for Muscle & Joint Pain

(Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Assessment)

While my main physiotherapy specialism is women’s health and pelvic health physiotherapy, I am also experienced in treating a wide range of common musculoskeletal problems affecting the muscles, joints and nerves.

Many people seek physiotherapy when pain, stiffness or injury begins to interfere with everyday activities, work or exercise. A musculoskeletal physiotherapy assessment focuses on identifying what is contributing to your symptoms and developing a clear rehabilitation plan to help restore movement, reduce pain and improve long-term function.

This pathway is most suitable if you are experiencing a specific muscle or joint problem and do not need support for pelvic floor symptoms.

People commonly seek MSK physiotherapy support for:
• Back pain
• sciatica and nerve-related leg pain
• neck pain
• shoulder pain
• thoracic outlet syndrome
• hip pain
• muscular strains or joint sprains
• stiffness or reduced mobility
• pain when returning to exercise
• postural discomfort related to work or daily activities

These are very common musculoskeletal issues and often respond well to a combination of manual therapy, targeted exercises and movement guidance.

What the assessment may include
• discussion of your symptoms and injury history
• observation of posture and movement patterns
• testing joint mobility, muscle strength and flexibility
• identifying movements or activities that aggravate symptoms
Following the assessment, I will explain the findings and provide clear guidance and a personalised rehabilitation plan.

Treatment approaches may include:

• hands-on manual therapy to ease muscular tension and restore comfortable movement
• targeted rehabilitation exercises to improve strength and mobility
• movement and technique coaching to support recovery
• postural and ergonomic advice for work or daily activities
• strategies to support a safe return to exercise

My approach often combines hands-on treatment with targeted rehabilitation exercises, which many people find particularly helpful when managing persistent or recurring muscular pain.

Clinical Scope and Signposting
My main physiotherapy specialism is women’s health physiotherapy, so while I am very comfortable treating many everyday musculoskeletal conditions, I do not provide some areas of physiotherapy within my practice.

For example, I do not provide rehabilitation following orthopaedic surgery such as hip or knee replacements, and my clinic is not set up for higher-level athletic rehabilitation, plyometrics or return-to-professional-sport programmes. I am also not able to provide running gait analysis, and exercise equipment is limited to weights up to approximately 15kg.

I also do not treat patients under the age of 18, and I do not offer neurological rehabilitation such as stroke or multiple sclerosis.

If your injury or rehabilitation goals fall into one of these areas, I am well networked with other physiotherapists locally and would be very happy to recommend someone who may be better equipped to support you.

Equally, if during a course of treatment I feel your injury would be better served by another therapist with particular skills or facilities, I will always be open about this and recommend referral onwards where appropriate.

MSK physiotherapy appointments are open to people of all genders.
